In class, we spoke about developing a paragraph using examples. We looked at a page from the affordable papers of the University of North Carolina that explains the development of a paragraph using exaples.
http://www.unc.edu/depts/wcweb/handouts/paragraphs.html#6
You actually wrote the paragraph (or started to write it) in class.
Remember, this is what I asked for:
- Topic sentence (1 sentence). This sentence tells the reader the main point of the paragraph
- Explain the topic sentences (1 or 2 sentences).
- An example. Use the words “For Example,…” to start this example. (1 – 2 sentences)
- Explain your example. (2 sentences)
- Another example. Use the words “Another example of…” to start your second example.
- Explain your second example.
- Conclusion (1 – 2 sentences)
Now I would like you to post your paragraph to this blog.
Write your paragraph in MS Word and cut and paste as a “comment.” All of you should complete this assignment before our next class on Nov. 16.
Thank you. I look forward to ALL of us reading your paragraphs!
Everybody wants to feel happy, but how we can feel happy? Happiness is not the feelings that we have when we get material possessions. For example, when we get a car, or go to an expensive restaurant. These not result in true happiness. Happiness is more than that. Happiness is the spiritual sensation that we feel when we have accomplished our goals. The person feels that he or she has accomplished something they worked hard for, which result in true happiness. For example, when we obtain our bachelor’s degree, or when we buy a house. The true meaning of happiness that I mentioned requires a lot of sacrifice. In fact, not all events that happen in our life, brings happiness because happiness brings satisfaction; we must obtain it through sacrifice and find pleasure in the little things in life.

Going to college and getting into college are very important steps of becoming a successful college student as the time approaches a high school graduate. To be successful in college, you must create or follow the guidelines to success. For example, Internal and External factors. These factors help us become successful. Internal Factors are ambition, perseverance and motivation. External factors are financial aid, transportation and support groups. Another example is choosing good friends and support groups. When you choose friends who help you build your self-esteem highly, you will more than likely enjoy college and excel in it. Because we are faced with many challenges as a college student, we must take the time to prepare for college and be successful in it.

It is so ironic how some people don’t quit smoking cigarettes until they have cancer.Cancer is caused by smoking of all sorts. The chemicals in smoking products are dangerously harmful. As we all know. For example I had a friend who used to smoke four packs of cigarettes each day.He went on doing this for sometime. He had been smoking cigarettes since he was in middle school. When he graduated from high school he had developed bronchitas, but he continued to smoke cigarettes. All through college he kept smoking cigarettes.Him continuing to smoke cigarettes didn’t help his bronchitas.Nine years after he graduated from college,he went to the doctors for complaining of coughing and chest pains. He was in for the worst the doctors told him he had Lung Cancer.Another example is he should probably quit smoking before it is to late. The only thing is and it is stupid. He continued to smoke even after the doctor told him his condition. He gave up smoking another two years later. His lungs were so black it didn’t make any since. The doctors told him it was a fifty percent chance he would win the battle against cancer. He continued with the treatment for almost eight months. My friend died from cancer. For the decisions he made he ended up dead in his early thirty’s.What a terrible lost.People who smoke should quit before it is to late.

People that are disciplined have better time management and tend to get more tasks accomplished. Discipline is the push for perfection and application of effort without exception. A case in where discipline is exercised most and has the largest effect is in small repetitive tasks. For example, coming home and sticking to a routine of cleaning then homework. It requires effort in order to repeat the same task everyday because it is much easier to use the excuse of being tired or busy. Also it is normal for people to tend to stay away from repetitive task because of boredom. Another example of applying discipline is cleaning dishes after eating. Sometimes people have at the habit of putting off something that could be finished within a small amount of time for later. By taking care of a trivial task early it frees up more time in the future to manage more important task. So with the application of discipline people that manage their small task well tend to have the potential to get more done.

Committing the act of suicide affects the individual life and others mainly. Acting upon suicide causes affliction and change others emotions of how they thought or still think about you committing suicide. For example, I was at church this weekend and a poet spoke about her attempt to commits suicide and she stopped because she thought about those around her, if children knew she did it they would have want to follow because she inspired them. Sometimes your decisions could greatly affect others. Another example, people perceptions change towards you. How could that person been so inspiring yet; do something so foolish. Suicide not only affects the individual but also those around them.

@Jasmin Soutien, As I read your paragraph, I could not help but to agree, especially when you wrote “sometimes your decision can greatly affect the lives of others.” In my high school, this one guy committed suicide. The entire junior and senior class was devastated and many of kids missed a lot of days in school. He was a popular guy, and even though I was not as close to him, I could see that his death hurt many people. As a result, the year was long and dreadful, in the end students got much closer to each other and were able to talk about the pain they felt and all shared.

Anxiety never helps anyone accomplish anything well. To be anxious is to worry and worrying doesn’t get anything done except stress the worrier. When one is stressed it affects their work and how they act. For example, a girl I know was to sing at a jazz festival. As she sat and waited for her turn to sing, her anxiety mounted causing her to heartbeat to quicken and her breathing to come fast and irregular, which affected the way she sang in a negative way. Because she was anxious about how she would sing in front of so many people, it affected how she sang. Her performance was not as good as it could have been. Another example of how anxiety negatively affects a person is when I performed a speech in front of judges at a tournament. I was anxious, nervous, about speaking and it affected my memory, and how I spoke. Anxiety tends to transfer from person to person. People can sense and see anxiety and it can make them uneasy. As you can see, anxiety does nothing good for anyone, not the one experiencing it or those around him.

Soccer is the best sports in the world. Soccer is a game played in 2 teams of 11 including the goalkeeper; the objective is to get the ball into the opponent’s goal using every part of your body except your arms or hands. Only the goalie is allowed to use there arms and hands. Soccer is the best sport because of how fun it is. For example, many games that are challenging are fun and that’s what soccer is its harder than it seems because there is at least five guys you have to get through and then get the ball past the goalkeeper. After you complete this challenge and do make a goal you get the high feeling of satisfaction and awesomeness; if you’re playing in a field with spectators watching and they are rooting for your team its all the more better because they cheer that you made the goal and that the team is winning. Your teammates will applaud you and that is a feeling I can never get enough of. Another reason why soccer is so fun is because you get to meet so many people while you play and can learn more tricks by either watching your own teammates or opponent’s doing the trick. In my life soccer has given me many friends who I still talk to even though they are in another country. I’ve learned tricks that are used by professionals in real life for example, a bicycle kick, a cross chop, or simply a step over pass. Many times when I go to Mexico and play soccer every time I end up making a new friend or meet someone new. If you play soccer I’m pretty sure you know what I mean. If you don’t play soccer you should give it a try because you could end up loving it.

Many dangerous wild animals are misunderstood. They are thought of as evil and ferocious animals that kill for sheer pleasure. Take the shark for example. Sharks attack and kill thousands of people all over the world each year. People think of them as evil monsters that love to kill. In fact, most shark attacks are not aggressive in nature. Sharks attack by instinct meaning that they are moved to attack and they attack out of curiosity. We humans look strange to them and they bite us to investigate. Most people die because they drown or bleed out not because of the actual attack. Another example of a misunderstood animal is the snake. Some people hate them and others keep them as pets. Whether they are venomous or not snakes bite in defense and not because they enjoy it. They get scared, feel threatened and protect themselves by biting the threat i.e. us. So next time you see a wild animal don’t be so quick to judge. Put yourself in their shoes and see how you would feel.

Growing up in a home without a parent is one of the most tragic things a child can deal with. If you think about it, a child who grows up in a home without a parent is missing that support from that certain parent that is missing. A parent raising a child on their own can only do so much for the child; support wise. For example, a daughter who is being raised by only her mother would probably have trust and relationship problems as an adult. That is if her mother wasn’t the type to tell her things such as she’s beautiful and she doesn’t need a man to tell her that, also that she should be treated like a queen and nothing less. Things like that is something a father would tell her daughter, and without being told those things, it would be very difficult when she gets older. Another example, a boy who is raised by only his father would be expected to be a man at all times. For instance, the guy really likes a girl and she breaks up with him, the father would teach him to move on automatically. He would probably say “suck it up” or “its life, you’re a man”. That’s fine but if the boy also had his mother, she would be there to comfort him and tell him that everything will be alright. So he would receive both ends of support and things would balance out for him. I really wish that people would think about the consequences of having a child before they have one because I don’t think they really understand how hard it is for a child being raised by a single parent. Instead of thinking about themselves when breaking up or leaving the mother or the father to raise the child on their own, they should work things out for the sake of the child. So that when the child gets older, they wouldn’t have so many problems.

@Woodlyne Love,I agree with your paragraph, I was raised in a single family home. My mother raised me and my two siblings without a father in the home with the help of family. People don’t realize the affects they cause. I too am a single mother trying to give my boys a good life. Parents that walk off and don’t take on their responsility as a mother or father really affect thier children’s future to have good relatioships. Children that grow up with one parent in the home tend to have trust, commitment, and love issues.I totally agree with your statement”I really wish that people would think about the consequences of having a child before they have one because I don’t think they really understand how hard it is for a child being raised by a single parent”.

Many parents don’t realize the effect college has on many students. Students at times may get really stressed out. Allow dropping out to be their number one priority. For example lack of communication start occurring, parents start to wonder why their child refuses to communicate with them. But the student isn’t really in the mood for communication, having much in mind like finishing up homework is a frustration taking over. Another example of a stressed out college student can be lack of appetite. Students go the whole day without eating at times. Parents don’t seem to even find out this is happening. Allowing college to take over can be risky. Although college is very important and serious because your career depends on you graduating, it isn’t something to stress over. College is one of the biggest parts in a student’s life. Therefore enjoy it and make the best out of it.

@Luz Gonzalez, I strongly agree with you. Parents have to be involve in the students life and making sure they are focus but not stessing and damanging their body. im stressing now with school and work and sometimes i feel like im gonna brake down so that is why i manage my time and make sure i eat. I also agree student’s should enjoy college year the best way they can and do not let it take over their lives.

The paragraph I want to dicuss is the movie “For Colored Girls”. It was orginaly a 1975 play written by Ntozake Shange. She wrote about nine women of color dealing with the struggles of living in the streets of New York. For instance, love, decepit, distrust, etc. Tyler Perry in a way made this flim really different than the orginal production. For example, in the play all the charaterized by the colors of their costumes that they were wearing, but not just any colors the colors of the rainbow. In the flim, Perry gave them not only colors but names, personalities, individuality at that. We could automatically tell who was who and what that person was going through and how we can compare that to our own lives.

The government should change the punishment for repeat offenders. For example, if the government made the punishment more serious each time someone break the law; the crime would decrease at a rapid rate. In addition, I think that the Florida should implement a three strike law in our system. Another example, One day I was having dinner with my girlfriend at a restaurant. We were enjoying our dinner in having a great time. We were leaving. I notice that it was a lot of glass on the grown I look at my window it was broke .Someone had broken into my car in stole my girlfriend pouch. The police caught the guy .In addition; the person who broke into my car was a repeat offender. I don’t have remorse for repeat offender. The charge for repeat offender should be punished to the highest degree. A repeat offender took away my joy and replaces it with hurt.

The health effect of obesity has always been a problem that a loathsome of people been dealing with. Beginning the year 2010 a report 15% of Americans were suffering with being obese or overweight and suffering the consequences. For example, when you are obese you can have respiratory problems. People who are obese tend to have heavy breathing when completing simple task as walking down the stairs because their body is carrying so much weight. Another example of a health effect that obesity can cause is type 2 diabetes. When you are obese your body stores an abundance of glucose and in result they can have kidney problems, heart disease, and even stroke. Obesity is not a problem we can just sit on but we must take action to spread the awareness of its health effects.

There are many signs to tell if someone has the thoughts to commit suicide. Most people pass off the symptoms as the person having a bad day or that they are going through some changes. NO one should ignore their first thought of something could be wrong. Never automatically think someone is fine when you have doubt. For example, a mother realizes her son has stopped his daily activities and is eating less. He has just broken up with his high school sweetheart who is moving off to college. The boy sits in his room all day when normally he would be out playing football. The mother should talk with her son and make sure he is alright because he could be suicidal. A discharged solider with no benefits and no job starting to drink heavily is another example. He claims he goes out to look for a job but says “ Won’t hire no veterans “ he may be getting upset with himself. He may yell, fight and throw things but as soon as he has said all he could say he just breaks down. That solider needs to talk to someone he may hurt himself or even others. People who need help will not inform you that they are going through a crisis. But if you take the minute to actually say something, you could just save a life.

Nowadays people thinks humors work with everyone. Everyone does not find everything funny or the same as the next person. Just because you find it funny and amusing, does not means that a brother, sister or friend might feel the same way. For example, John might hit Mary and she’s okay with it, but it’s not okay with Jessica when John hits her. Another example, there is some peoples who goes around saying mean things about people family members like “you’re mother is fat” and laugh about it. Majority of peoples won’t care but it might really affect one person because it might be true and their mother might be dying from heart disease or just being over weighted. Humor can often make a bad situation so be careful of what comes out the lips and to whom.

Many of us today use social sites to communicate however, we don’t realize the effects those post or blogs may have on our lives.Posting comments on Facebook, MySpace, or Twitter can affect us when it comes to employment, getting into college, and criminal involvement. For example,my bother was picked up by homicide police because of misunderstood information. He was linked to the crime from a picture off facebook. He was picked and questioned once the police checked out his where abouts he was release. Posting comments on Facebook can affect ones life just as it affected June Talvitie-Siple’s life. For example, Siple was asked to resign from her postion because of a comment she posted on Facebook.I advise people to watch what they post because you never know who may see it.

Becoming a teenage parent can practically ruin a teenager’s life. A teenager’s life completely changes. For example, the teenager can no longer focus on school like before. You have to give your attention to a baby instead of studing for a test. Because you can not study your grades drop. Another example, of a negative effect of early parenthood is you lose out on being a teenager. You can no longer participate or hang out with friends because you haveto take care of a baby. You can not shop for those new hot shoes or the latest style because now your money have to go towards the necessities for the baby.
The above effects are just a few listed. There are many challenges that a teenager face with early preganancy. Therefore, be wise about the decisions you make and let sex wait. Enjoy life as a teenager and not a parent all too soon.
[Reply]
@Andria Woodall, I agree with what you are saying. Lots of teenagers are having children before they even graduate. Many female teenagers believe that having a child is going to keep a guy around but what they fail to realize is that the guy can up and leave anytime he wants to without acknowledging the child. They also fail to realize that its hard raising a child at a young age, and if your doing it all alone its much harder. So i agree with you, they do need to be wise and enjoy their moments as being a teenager.

Sex education is important and necessary to be taught in schools. Even though many shy away from this issue and leave it as an untouched subject, it is crucial for government to enforce sex education in schools. Parents think that enforcing sex education in school is not necessary. However, many teens who usually end up with an unwanted pregnancy or with an sexually transmitted disease admit to being ignorant of the negative side effects of sexual intercourse. For example, in the church I grew up in, I had a friend named Maria who by the age of 14 was having sex. A year and a few months later I notice her belly began to grow larger and larger, to everyone’s surprise, she was pregnant. She told me she had no idea what a condom was and that her parents never mentioned what it was to her. Another example is the fact that nearly 1 in every 5 teenagers are not virgins. These individuals often are raised not even knowing that some life threatening diseases can be transmitted. Government should not just focus on teaching young adults to remain abstinence but face the fact that sex education is needed in every school. Doing so can decrease the number of unwanted pregnancies as well as the number of abortions, it can even save a life.

Basically I made the last entry up to prove a point.People who do things that are detrimental to their health and their lives should change their ways before it is to late.We should all lead good spiritual lives that can guide us to a strong reality.Every one wants to live a righteous life and make it to paradise in the afterlife. But we have to do the right thing in this life to accomplish that. Its not hard we have to do the right thing all the time and make wise decisions. So keep that in mind.
