Barry, ENG302, Summer 2011 — Research Paragraph

In class, you wrote a paragraph for your research paper using two sources, in APA style using in-text (parenthetical) citations. I would like you to post that paragraph to this blog post. But there’s more. First, write a general description of what your paper is about (1 paragraph). Then, write a rough outline for you paper. THEN, write your paragraph with your two sources. Please, after your paragraph tell me where in the outline you expect this paragraph to go.

My research paper talks about the three groups of foods many people eat; Conventional, organic and genetically grown foods. Due to the outbreak of food viruses, allergens and illnesses, it has brought an awareness as to how food is grown and produced. Many people are becoming more health conscience, and would like to eat food that are more healthier fro their bodies. Their are also some individuals that decide to eat a certain group of foods due to moral values. My paper will also look at the cost of each group and how this also becomes a factor.

    Paragraph with two sources:

The question of whether to eat conventional, organic, or genetically grown foods, has been on the minds of many. This debate has been around for many years, and has divided many Americans. To some, it does not matter if foods are organic, conventional or genetically grown, all that matters is the taste (Parsons, 2009). On the other hand, some people choose to eat these foods, not necessarily because it taste good, but due to their moral standards (Stewart, 2000).

My research paper is about Cleft Lip and Cleft Palate. It will give you in depth detail about an abonormalty that people do not want to address by turning their heads to such sight, which is cleft lip and cleft palate. The research paper will give the definition of both clefts and some statistics on the both of them. The first siting of cleft lip and how it is viewed in other countries. There will be details of the speculated causes and effects of cleft lip and cleft palate, from the facial abnormalties to the bone grafting for the teeth. Also, in this paper is discussed the treatment and goals for children born with defromity and how and where to locate the help needed for the corrective procedures of cleft lip and cleft palate.

In the year 1550, it was said that there is one unfortunate thing alot of women are challenged with during pregnancy, by either
their food consumption or jumping over the head of a rabbit, specifically a hare. There will be a possibility of the child being born with a hair lip, which is commomnly known as cleft lip. Cleft lip is when the lip has a split which separetes the mouth and the nose (BKK, 2000). Statistics states in Bangladesh the chance of a child being born with cleft lip of cleft palate is about 4 in every 1,000. The is approximately 5,000 children born having cleft lip or cleft palate (Springer, 2002).

I have worked in the field of Substance Abuse Treatment for the past fifteen years, and have always believed that there is something lacking in the way society treats addicts as though they are weak and incapable of making sound decisions when it comes to their recovery process. Addiction treatment as a whole has not evolved much and remains pathology driven. I love the concept of positive psychology and the different dynamics of the helping profession that have incorporated it. Life Coaching, Appreciative Inquiry and the Strengths Revolution are a few of the higher evolved aspects of positive psychology. The world expands when we make a decision to “Live on Purpose.” I wanted to investigate them further and discuss how they have enabled people to have productive lives filled with happiness, holistic health and productivity.

II. Addiction – Explanation including symptoms, behaviors and consequences
    III. Traditional Forms of Therapy
    A. Behavioral Modification Approach
    B. Therapeutic Communities

    VI. Conclusion

    Paragraph with Sources

Society’s manner of dealing with addiction has primarily been to treat addicts as if they are weak and incapable of being pro-active in their recovery process. Chemical dependency treatment dynamics have a history of being stereotypical and one-sided in nature. No single modality of treatment is appropriate for everyone in need. Individualized treatment plans that analyze the patient as a complete person are crucial to the success of the patient’s return to normalcy in the family, workplace and society (NIH 2011). By the time a person arrives in treatment they are wounded and have a strong sense of defeat. This is a time when empowerment would benefit them more than a diagnosis based in mental illness. In turbulent times it is easy to drown in fear and become discouraged. Empowerment allows the individual to step into true self- knowledge, and begin a journey of greater awareness (Ferguson 2009).

My research paper is about coping with the loss of a loved one. I have decided to write this paper because it is something that is close to my heart, because I lost my parents, infant brother and a very close family friend as well. I will explain in this paper how I reacted to the deaths and the steps I took to make a positive out of a very situation. I am hoping with this paper people will get a better understanding that you can make a positive out of a negative and that you don’t have to hold a grudge for the death and also there is help out there and not to be embarrassed to ask for it.

    Outline
    I. Introduction
    II. History of my losses
    A. How it happened to me and how I coped
    III. Grieving
    B. The grieving process
    IV. How to cope
    C. A better understanding on coping
    V. Negative into a positive
    D. How to have a better outlook

Shawn Vallee a 3 ½ year old with rosy cheeks and a cherubic smile, died of cancer Saturday evening in a hospital room full of friends and family. Shawn was diagnosed with Neuroblastoma a cancer of the adrenal glands or the nervous system, when he was 3 months old. (Maria Elena Fernandez 1992) Neuroblastoma is most commonly diagnosed in children before age 5. The cancer occurs in approximately 1 out of 100,000 children and is slightly more common in boys. General description:
The topic of my research paper is Employment discrimination against ex-offenders. I know several people very close to me who are discriminated due to their criminal background. I know that many people can relate to this topic as there are inmates who are actually innocent and some ex-offenders actually do change after doing time in jail or prison. It is already hard for people without a criminal history to get a job and discriminating ex-offenders will only lead them to do more criminal activity.

    Topic: Employment Discrimination against ex-offenders
Introduction: How can giving ex-offenders employment benefit our neighborhoods?
    I. What is discrimination:
    A. Define Equal Employment Opportunity
    B. Define Human Rights Act
II. Arguments against protecting ex-offenders employment rights
    A. Rights of employers
    B. Rights of society
III. Arguments for protecting ex-offenders employment rights
    A. Rights of ex-offenders
    B. How does it benefit society
Conclusion: explain the benefits for giving ex-offenders employment.

Giving ex-offenders employment may help reduce crime rate within our community. In certain situations, employers should reconsider hiring ex-offenders in order to keep the streets safe. For example, employment can reduce ex-offenders chances of being re-incarcerated (Mukamel, 2000). Without jobs, there is no income and without income, they will be in the streets looking for illegal and easy ways to make money. Another example how our crime rates may decrease is by giving ex-offenders better training and education. The majority of ex-offenders who return to crime get into trouble within the first 60 days (Owen, 1995). With education and training, they will be better prepared for a job interview. A final example how our crime rates may decrease by giving ex-offenders employment is by building trust. If you show them that they can be trusted, most of them will give you 110% of their time and dedication but since society has labeled them as criminals, they are being treated different from everyone else. Once you do your time in jail or prison, you should be considered a free person ready for a new start. However society makes is almost impossible for ex-offenders to succeed.

My paragraph will be included in roman numeral III, letter B.

Sometimes children must perform important tasks within the family. This gives the children a sense of security that their voice will be heard or that their opinion about family matters will matter or be respected. For example, when I was a child every night the dinner table my father would ask how our day was. Which made me or should I say us feel good, to know that our father was interested in what we was feeling. My father explained to us that he and his siblings didn’t share the events of the day to my grandmother, because worked two jobs. Another example, say a single mother of three got a job promotion, but it was in another city. The children are 13, 14, and 16; they have lived in the city since birth. The mother comes home after work; she asked them how they would feel about the move. The three agreed even though they didn’t want to move, but, because their mother respected their input on moving, they understood the benefits of the promotion. How I missed my friends of many years after they moved. A final example, chores I feel taught me a sense of responsibilities. We all were assigned a chore in my household, which rotated weekly. Therefore, teaching us about cleanliness and how to maintain a household of our own someday. All these examples teach us is that children have a voice that I meant to be heard. But, if we silence their opinion in family situations, what kind of character will they develop. With that thought in mind, listen to them as you have them listen to you.

In this paper I will research the controversial issue of whether or not brain cancer is directly caused by cell phone use. I will begin by discussing the informative and statistical facts concerning both brain cancer and the worldwide spread of cell phone use over the last 20 years. I will then continue the paper by presenting the connection between brain cancer and the excessive use of cell phones as supported by the information retained from my sources. I will then discuss the different types of brain cancer and the specific symptoms that are said to be caused by excessive cell phone use. Next I will provide a testimony from Susan Reynard who will be used as a primary example supporting the link between brain cancer and cell phone use. Then I will compare and contrast the amount of radiation emitted by cell phones verse other products. I will then discuss who is getting affected the most, how this happened and what is being done to prevent this issue in the future. Finally I will provide my conclusion where I will wrap up my paper and provide you with my final thoughts concerning brain cancer and the excessive use of cell phones.

My research paper speaks of the similarities of creating shared values and Ubuntu. How the characteristics of Ubuntu can be weaved into business. So that society can also profit business. I know that society as a whole we are all connected, and business is a part of society, therefore society and business is connected. As of now business is reaping the benefits of society needs, yet. Some businesses will not or refuse to accept that, society is the backbone of business. Ubuntu and creating shared values speaks of how, if business and society work together as a team, that both needs of society and business could be met. For example, by incorporating Ubuntu into business could influence the lives and behavior people, which would then decrease the economic we suffer from now. The demand for business products has decreased, due to unemployment increase. So people will and can purchase their necessities, not purchase their wants. Another example, is how businesses are going out of business, because of the lack of purchase from society, yet, if business was to reevaluate their primary goal they want to achieve, and make society a priority, instead of profit, this may or may not keep them in business. A final example, businesses should hold a community meeting, allowing society direct input on cost their product. By bridging this gap, society will begin to spend more money, and companies will continue to strive. Once we realize that one cannot survive without the other, our economic problem will decrease, and the needs of society and business can be met.
    Outline
    I. Introduction
II. Definition of creating shared values and Ubuntu
III. Examples of creating shared values
    IV. Examples of Ubuntu
    V. Similarities of creating shared values and Ubuntu
    VI. Conclusion

If we reflect positive view about business as a part of society and not a individual, then this can encourage society and business as a whole to stive for each other’s goals, and compete against the entity that brought the two together (Kamwangama, 2011). The point that if both society and business “responsibility” needs to be implanted in the decision making process, instead of letting businesses a marketing program, could represent an evolutionary progress in adoption for both society and business.

Thanks to AMC, all men want to be Don Draper now and all women love the fashion of Mad Men, but why do young advertising students still dream of an internship in Madison Avenue? According to many Advertising is a craft, to those in the business it is an art or a science. But how do we “make you spend money you don’t have on a product you don’t need” (Leo Burnett direct quote). For anyone in the business we live for two days, the Super Bowl and Cannes, but we started out with an ad outside a Church (Jan?ci?c, 2010) and have evolved into a multibillion-dollar industry that today reaches across all continents. We will look at some the famous hit and misses of the craft and those who made Madison Avenue the center of the world for anyone of dreams of seeing their work on TV.

My research paper focuses on the different types of elder abuse in the United States. It will provide the reader with a definition of elderly abuse, and it would list and define the different types of abuse including; physical, emotional, sexual, neglect, and financial exploitation. This paper will also provide the audience with two incredible cases of abuse. After reading the information of this research paper, the reader will be able to identify the different types of abuse, and it is going to have the knowledge of how to report these abuses.

    Elderly Abuse Outline

    I. Introduction
    II. What is Elderly Abuse?
    III. Different types of Abuse
    a. Physical
    b. Psychological
    c. Financial exploitation
    d. Sexual
    e. Self-neglect
    IV. Two cases of Abuse
    a. Mickey Rooney
    b. Mrs. Eva Allen
    V. What is the Elder Assessment Instrument?
VI. Ways to prevent abuse and how to report it
VII. Punishment for Abuse against elders
    VIII. Conclusion

Physical elder abuse is non-accidental use of force against an elderly person that results in physical pain, injury, or impairment. Such abuse includes not only physical assaults such as hitting or shoving but the inappropriate use of drugs, restraints, or confinement (Helpguide).
The 90 year old veteran mentioned he was being financially exploited and he was “stripped of the ability to make even the most basic decision about my life”. He says he was afraid to seek help because he was overwhelmed by his fear, anger and disbelief. “For years I suffered silently, unable to muster the courage to seek the help I needed” he said. Rooney argues that fighting abuse is complicated because you are not just dealing with your fears but you are also dealing with family relationships. “Because of your love for other family members, you might feel hesitant to come forward”…”to those seniors and especially elder veterans like myself, I want to tell you this: You are not alone and you have nothing to be ashamed of. If elder abuse happened to me, it can happen to anyone,”… “I want you to know you deserve better,” Rooney said (AARP).

I expect to include the information from the above sources in section II, and section IV.
