MDC1101-581396-Example Paragraph

In class, we spoke about developing a paragraph using examples.  We looked at a page from the University of North Carolina that explains the development of a paragraph using exaples.

http://www.unc.edu/depts/wcweb/handouts/paragraphs.html#6

You actually wrote the paragraph (or started to write it) in class.

Remember, this is what I asked for:

  1. Topic sentence (1 sentence).  This sentence tells the reader the main point of the paragraph
  2. Explain the topic sentences (1 or 2 sentences).
  3. An example.  Use the words “For Example,…” to start this example. (1 – 2 sentences)
  4. Explain your example. (2 sentences)
  5. Another example.  Use the words “Another example of…” to start your second example.
  6. Explain your second example.
  7. Conclusion (1 – 2 sentences)

Now I would like you to post your paragraph to this blog.

Write your paragraph in MA Word and cut and paste as a “comment.”  All of you should complete this assignment before our next class on Nov. 10.

Thank you.  I look forward to ALL of us reading your paragraphs!

  1. Tiffany Spring says:

Some people, like me, are faced with a tough choice, work or school? It is a challenge being a part-time employee at Subway and a part-time student, but it’s something to be proud of. In the long run, school is more important to me than work itself. For example, at my job I get paid minimum wage and the only way to be paid more is by becoming manager. Completing a college degree would show employers that I can excel using critical thinking, or thinking outside the box. Another example of why it’s better to finish college is that I can earn a degree in a career path that interests me. I don’t like making sandwiches and mopping floors- I’d rather sit at a desk on a computer all day. While learning these things in college I have an opportunity to hone my skills and become certified in a field I like. In conclusion, I’m very satisfied that I have an opportunity to continue my education through college. I will be even more happy when the process is complete and I obtain my degree to do what I like.

@Tiffany Spring, I totally agree with you when it comes to working and going to school; both the tasks can be challenging. I also agree with the statement that school is more important than working because ultimately school is available to lead you toward your final goals. Working at a fast food or minimum wage paying job can make life harder in the real world. I love your paragraph!

    Anxiety

Sweaty hands, racing heartbeat and butterflies flying all around your stomach are all signs of anxiety. What is anxiety? But some uncomfortable feeling that last only a few minutes. For example, you are getting ready to attend a job interview for a high paying job; starting off your morning making a mess out of your room because in your mind nothing is good enough to wear for your interview. Another example as you’re driving you feel your heart jumping out of your chest of the nervous thought of being rejected, meeting new people and could even have anxiety of getting the job and starting in a new environment. The thing about people and anxiety is basically the thought of change or a new challenge. The solution of anxiety according to Collier is “If you put an individual in an anxiety-provoking situation often enough, he will eventually learn that there isn’t anything to be worried about.”In conclusion, most of the things that people worry about 88% percent of it never happen. Therefore relax, take deep breaths in and out and think that you have nothing to worry about. Don’t be afraid to take a challenge and let anxiety be the last thought going through your mind.

@Sara Plasencia, A good well written essay that we can connect to.anxiety is alway a fear difficult to surpass it being the first day of school or a public oral presentation. I agree on the fact that anxiety should not run your life or stop from doing things but people should learn to over come it

    @Sara Plasencia,

You did a good job in your introductory sentence. Being descriptive is an effective way to capture the readers attention. Your real-life examples were also strong points in your paragraph. Everyone deals with anxiety, which makes your work interesting, therefore readers should correlate with their experience. I accept anxiety to be the last thing to crawl in my mind.

Wolves, to most human beings, are dark creatures that do the devils work. Folklores and fairy tales have ruined the true nature of wolves for years. Television shows and movies have also hurt the wolf’s reputation. For example the tales of the Three Little Pigs tell of a wolf that only wants to eat the pigs and ruins their homes. The tale of Little Red Riding Hood also depicts the wolf as a cold, heartless creature that eats the grandma and wants to eat Little Red Riding Hood as well. In both stories the wolf dies because of its bad reputation, and for the most part the wolf is seen as a furry four-legged beast that simply hunts and kills. Another example of people ruining the reputation of the wolf is the all too familiar folklores of a rabid, virus infected wolf that attacks people in the night and causes them to change into a werewolf under a full moon against their will. In other cases movies have inflicted fear upon the watchers. The movie the Never Ending Story had a black wolf by the name of Gmork who was known as the creature of darkness in the film, and once again the wolf was shown trying to kill a human being. Many have expressed that they are afraid or hate wolves due to movies like The Never Ending Story that show the wolf as a horrid creature of the night. In reality people do not see that by showing such a negative side of the wolf they are only encouraging hatred and fear, and when hatred and fear is misplaced it leads to the slaughtering of a magnificent animal. Many people who support how beautiful and good natured the wolf is see that it is a symbol of family, unity, leadership, hierarchy, and even love. People need to realize that just because something is presented in such an indecent way doesn’t mean that it is that way.

@Jessica Gomez, I really like this subject and the fact that you dont let what movis and fairytales have put in other peoples mind to really let you see the true symbols behind wolves. The indians knew the true meaning of wolves they were actually infactuated with wolves and used alot of the wolves techniques to hunt. Wolves are also one of the very few animals that can survive in the cold and heat, they are very beautiful animals and us as humans can learn from them there pack and there way of life.

I believe working out should be an ultimatum that should be incorporated into everyone’s daily schedule. A regular workout plan is a healthy way to prevent all sorts of baleful diseases just around the corner. For example, obesity is a disease that perturbs 34 percent of adults in the United States, which accumulates to more than 72 million people. Obesity has many repercussions such as developing high blood pressure, stroke, heart disease, type 2 diabetes, gallbladder disease, cataracts, AMD, as well as cancer of the colon, prostate and even breasts. Another example of the benefits of working out has to offer is the cure to a mild to moderate depression that can ultimately lead to severe depression, which may lead to irrational decisions made by one’s self. Exercise fights depression by making you feel more in control of your life, increases your energy, increases your self-esteem, ,lets you vent you stress and frustrations as well as letting you have a better rested sleep. A daily workout plan of 30 to 45 min daily can do a lot for you and takes nothing from you. So be active allow yourself a chance at a better you, and live life on the run.

You present the reader with several facts that should persuade them to include some sort of exercise as a weekly if not daily priority. All of your examples are about prevention of common diseases that plague many people’s lives, as well as the benefits of regular workout routines. I absolutely love your closing sentence! Great paragraph!

Convenience friends are convenient indeed; but there is nothing more loving than to have that one special best friend. Convenience friends are there to lend a hand here and there. While best friends are there to stay through all trials and tribulations. Friendships I have and friendships I see serve many different functions, and meet different needs. For example, the next-door neighbor can easily be a friend simply because they drove our kids to football practice once when we were sick. Having a best friend is the friend who shares the same interest, totally supports someone, and bare the secrets of their souls with no questions asked. Another example of a convenience friend would be the girl i met in school who keeps me updated with class when i’m absent. We aren’t very close, is emotional distance from each other, and rarely speaks to one another outside of class if it isn’t about school. There can always be a sufficient value found in convenience friends but will never share the same meaning of a best friend.

A whirl wind of craziness, a never ending sensations of nothingness that cant be controlled, but is it truly uncontrollable? The ultimate responsibility for how someone is living their life is only that person themselves. Many people find all kind of reasons to blame or point the finger at for how their lives has turned out to be. However, that person has always had the capability to live their lives exactly the way they want. For example, Liz Murray the author of ‘Braking Night’ over came her various obstacles that stood in front of her path and went from homeless to Harvard. Liz choose to not to follow the broken cycle she was introduced into as a child; she could have become a drug addict like her parent or even allow herself to stay homeless however she decided to pursue a higher dream for herself restlessly to get to where she is today. Another example that people are the ones who control the outcomes to their life is abused wives who decide to stay by their husbands sides despite knowing they deserve better than how their husbands treat them. These women allow themselves to become codependent of an abusive spouse which they could choose to stop being with at any moment. People are have the ability to choose how they live their lives; no one can choose how someone lives their lives useless they allow them to.

Through the scopes and views of many, speaking another language besides English in public is considered impolite. Being in the United States of America many feel that one should be obliged to speak English; however, what most do not know is that the United States has not established an official language. The reason being because this country was established by immigrants who spoke a variety of different languages. For example, According to gadling.com there is approximately 311 languages spoken in the United States. With so many languages spoken one cannot expect to walk out of their home and not hear a language that is not their own. Another example, According to the 2000 US census, people of German ancestry make up the largest single ethnic group in the United States. English, Spanish, French, German, Navajo and other Native American languages, all other languages are usually learned from immigrant ancestors that came after the time of independence or learned through some form of education. The United States does not have an official language; however, the primary language for all government legislation, executive orders and regulations is English. Even though, English is used for all government purposes one must respect others because English is also a language brought to this continent by the Europeans and it is not the native tongue of the land.

Many good law abiding citizens are afraid to report a crime while it’s going on. People are scared to be caught and then held accountable for a criminal being put behind bars. Although it’s the right thing to do, some just don’t want to carry that burden upon their shoulders. For example, in Queens, New York, 35 spectators watched as a murder was taking place right in front of them; and none of them picked up the phone to call the police until after the victim was dead. Even though her death probably couldn’t have been avoided, maybe her killer could have been caught before he committed anymore crimes. Another example is in Key West, Florida, where drug lords roam the streets at night selling weed and cocaine by the ounces and pounds. Even though people know what they are doing, no one is brave enough to call the police and report the crime. Indeed, not wanting to be involved in such a problem is understandable, but when it comes to major crimes, one should call the police. A phone call may not seem like much, but it can stop lives from ending to short.

People always wonder how is it that a “smart person” got smart. When a person answers their own question they just think “they were just born smart” and don’t really ever bother asking a “smart person” were they got their intelligence.Yes, some people might have actually been born smart, some might have teachers as parents but others might have another reason for being smart. For example in “How I Got Smart”, Steve Brody writes how a crush on Debbie- the smartest girl in his English II class in highschool- turned him on the path of becoming a “smart person”. Steve Brody writes that he was desperate to find a way to talk to Debbie so he got the idea of buying Volume I of the encyclopedia and when he got the opportunity to impress her by his knew gained knowledge, he would take it. In the end Steve Brody finds out that Debbie had an average C boyfriend and was heart broken by this but he soon realized that he had gained to much to stop learning. Another example of why people become “smart people” is motivation to have better. People who have came from unfortunate backgrounds want a better life for themselves and love ones as well so they work their way up and excel to their highest point possible. Not everyone is born smart; everyone has a different and unique story on how they got their title of the “smart person”.

    Surprise!!

Life is full of leaping surprises that can reroute our course, for better or worse. We decide what music we like or dislike, what we want to study, and what career we strive to pursue. For example, a close friend of mine insisted on attending Miami Dade Community College but a surge of life’s trials forcibly optioned him to move out of state. His parents unpredictably fell in a phase where their income was not suffice to pay their debts, due to job scarcity. His family, adventurously, relocated to Iowa where they were able to find higher paid jobs even though they lamented their departure. Another example of bewilderment is when someone’s career diminishes because of his or her physical condition. A gifted football player proved to be the best at what he did. He was preparing himself to play with the big timers, or so he thought. One day while playing football with his friends, he had an incident. The upcoming all-star player missed a sack and ran into his buddy head-on. He shattered his vertebra and remained paralyzed for the rest of his life. Unwitting mistakes or surprises have the leverage that can shift our lives in an instant.

  11. Erwin Zamora-Guzman says:

“Honesty is the best policy”; this is what I was taught as a child, but as life went on I learned that “the truth hurts.” It hurts when someone tells you the cold hard truth, but what truly hurts is being the person confessing the truth. For example, your love one gives you a shirt with her picture blown up in the front and she may want you to wear it for your birthday. You have a choice to either lie by telling her that the shirt is amazing; or you can tell the truth and watch her feelings hurt. Honestly which one would you choose? Most people don’t want to hurt their love ones especially if it’s a one of a kind gift just for you. Another example of the truth hurting would be accepting that someone close to you is dead. How would you deal with losing someone so precious to you? The death of a person brings immense suffering to many people. Accepting the death can be very challenging because it’s not the reality that anyone wants to experience; especially if it means living the rest of your life miserable and alone. In conclusion, the truth hurts; no matter the size there would always be pain. “Honesty is the best policy”, it may causes pain, but that’s life.

For years we have been mining the earths land for resources, now some countrys are looking at the ocean floor as a possible mining site. The chinese government is looking to be the first to exploit the ocean floor. For example, chinese scientists are saying that gold and copper deposits in the ocean floor are much greater than those on land. On land there is a 0.46 percent of copper compared to 6.7 in the ocean floor. Another example of why countrys are starting to look at the ocean floor for mining is because it would boost their industrial growth. One of the leading seafloor-mining companies estimated to mine several billion tons of copper each year. Ocean mining seems like a horrible idea, we have already destroyed enough of our planet and it would be a great loss to us as a species to allow this to happen.

  13. Lily Mustelier says:

Over the years, eating family meals together has been valued less and less, but is sharing a meal at the dinner table the key to educating children properly? Eating as a family at the dinner table can teach children values and how to be a member in their culture. For example, research indicates that the more meals together, the less likely kids are to smoke, drink, do drugs, get depressed, develop eating disorders, and consider suicide. Instead, a family meal together can offer children to excel in school, delay sex, eat their vegetables, expand their vocabulary, and proper dinner etiquette. Another example of the benefits in sharing a family meal is children learning to compromise. With everyone having their own ideal meal and separate distractions, the kids never learn to share or make time for a proper dinner. The parents are the culprits for bad behavior in their kids; they assume their teens are too old or too busy when in fact they require that extra time to talk to them and guide them. So before microwaving Mac n’ cheese, get everyone together to prepare a homemade meal and odds are everyone is more likely to eat it while enjoying a simple, yet meaningful conversation with mom and dad.

Do unto others as you would do upon yourself; isn’t that what you were always told when you didn’t want to share your toys as a child? This saying may be more popular now, but not with toys, with organs. With organ transplant lists being so long, some people think that the new rule should be you get an organ if your a donor yourself. For example, being an organ donor wouldn’t trump a person whose been waiting a year for their transplant. It would however put you at the same pace with someone who’s equal to you in medical need. Another example is the saying an eye for an eye. Your willing to take someone else’s organ, but are you willing to give your own? This is a very heavy topic to ponder on and honestly I don’t think anyone can really give a true answer into the matter until they’ve been there. Either laying in a bed waiting or watched their mom wait, but it never hurts to think and realize what filling out a little card could do for another person, or even yourself.

@Gina Bahr, your paragraph is very consolidated; not so lengthy but straight to the point. you place the thought of seeing my mother on a bed waiting for a needed organ and shed the light of reality that a significant person could possibly pass or live in agony simply because too many selfish non-donors refuse to give to the needy. mentioning the simplicity of becoming a donor to the reader supports the idea. it is as easy as filling out a little card with one’s information.

Marijuana is the most common widely used drug in the United States yet it is illegal. It is evident that the criminal penalties against marijuana aren’t preventing it from being the most common drug. Crime would decrease with legalization and taxing of marijuana. For example, law enforcements would be able to focus more on less petty and more serious crimes, and the crime and violence associated with the drug market would cease. Another example is that nearly a million arrests are made each year for small possession of marijuana and it makes a significant percent in drug arrests. Each year billions of the tax payers money is spent on incarceration cost, if it were legal and taxed on marijuana would be more financially beneficial. Marijuana is a lot more beneficial in a number of ways if legalized.

We are becoming increasingly aware of the extent to which human activities pollute and destroy the natural environment. This is perhaps most dramatically exemplified by the growing international concern with global warming, much of which is now believed to be the result of human activities that have resulted in the build- up of green house gasses chiefly carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide. Our health, agriculture, water resources, forest, wildlife, and coastal areas are all at risk. The main cause of global warming is our demands for better technology. Our lifestyles are destroying our planet. For example, a few years ago, we had to either get an antenna or a new television because our signals were change to digital. I don’t know one person to have a television with an antenna. Countless televisions had to be thrown out. Imagine how much that alone adds to our pollution problem. There were no problem with the way it was before and it should off just stayed like that instead of polluting our planet with perfectly fine televisions. Another example is our use of water bottles. Millions of water bottles are being thrown out every day. We all live a fast life and that makes us lazy. It is easier to just grab a water bottle instead of using a refillable one. Like my daughter say, “we are making the earth sick.” We all need to change our lifestyles for the sake of our future generations. Once this world becomes unlivable, we will not be able to throw it out for a new one like we do with everything else.

Confucius once stated that, “Signs and symbols rule the world, not words and law.” symbols and their meaning trace back to the dawn of time, within that time it original meaning is deluded or lost. Its troubling to see how many people accept some symbols without researching their meanings. For example, males who wear their pants bellow their waist, exposing their glutuos maximus are considered “cool” by some in society. While in prison, that fashion statement means that the person is a homosexual looking for sex. Another example, the dollar bill, since when do we have pyramids in the United States, let along ones with an All-seeing Eye. The pyramid generally represents an organization called, “The Illuminati”, the All-seeing Eye is the entity they worship, Lucifer. Before wearing that cool looking t-shirt, or drawing signs because of boredom, look into the meaning. The symbols may mean more than what was expected.

@Josh Moreno, Your paragraph is very straight forward. It’s easy to understand and relatable to a subject that we see constantly around us. Many people have followed many trends simply by seeing it around, and which is some times misrepresented. As you say with The Illuminati, who is represented by the pyramid. People have become accustomed to simply doing things, such as follow trends or draw symbols, even say certain things without fully realizing the meaning of their action. Many symbols have more meaning than what people tend to realize. Such as the Crescent Moon, many people simply see it as a pretty symbol or drawing meanwhile it’s a symbol of the aging goddess to contemporary witches and to Muslims is means victory over death.

Some people feel that the way your parents are brought up is how their child will be raised. This person can be anyone from a childhood friend to a close co-worker who knows a little about your parents. For example a negative person who don’t know you and haven’t got the chance to know you will judge you by taking one look at you. Some people feel that if they know how your parents are they already can imagine what the child is like. Sometimes your parents bad decisions can reflect right back on you and depending on how you are raised it can take a little to prove someone right and a lot to prove them wrong. Another example is of someone that knows your parents back round can see you having an off day but they don’t look at it that way. Their saying is you are going to be just like your parents most of the time when someone says that it’s always negative. Some people without giving you the benefit of the doubt not knowing if your parents raised you different wouldn’t care how many good things you do just because they know your parents they have no problem with judging you. I speak on this because I am living proof I have been judged on bad decisions my parents have made but I was raised totally different but no one cares to judge you after al if they know how your parents are they feel they know you it’s up to you to prove them wrong.

My dad always taught me respect was something earned not given, and could not be priced tagged. Just because you are rich an famous doesn’t mean people respect you, ive seen many people with money think that they could buy respect, and at the end looked like a fool. A money who works hard everyday for his money to take care of his family is always more likely to get respect from a community then a rich snobby person. For example O.J Simpson is probably the most famous athlete that was known but no one respects him for a mans respect is measured by his words and actions that follow. O.J was once known for his superb athletic skill in the NFL and was respected for that then started getting caught up with all types of crazy things. One of the most craziest things he did and lost my personal respectwas after he beat the murder case and pledge innocent he wrote a book called “What if I Did It”. Higher power never meant that you get more respect either, for example George Bush a lot of people felt that George Bush was a selfish president and thought only about the higher class. Even as the President of the United States people would talk negative about George Bush, an we can all agree that’s one of the highest powers in the Nation. A lot of people lost respect for George Bush after they felt that he was playing tricks and games with the nation when the whole war began, for years he spoke about weapons of mass destruction but til this day nothing has been found. Bill Clinton has a lot more respect then George Bush even with the actions that happened in the white house, but trust had a lot to do with it because people trusted Bill Clinton because he never put the country in a position to be at war or for more peoples lives to be lost on his own selfish act. Respect like most people will agree has to be earned, and once lost can never be regained. But before you can hope to get respect dont forget to give respect and respect yourself first.

Sarcastic tones fill the pages of King’s selection, alongside the serious ones. His beginning line of “I think we are all mentally ill, those of us outside the asylums only hide it a little better– and maybe not all that much better, afterall.” This means that some people such as directors, writers and singers; Artists in general have all rights to open insanity. The best target is the unsuspecting mind. This is simply because those of us during “everyday” life are indefinitely required to hide our flaws and act normal. Although there is no such thing as normal; for the people we deem to be insane are simply the one’s that have the guts to let themselves show through completely. As humans we are all bound to hit this point in our lifetime, even if its temporary. For example, such movies as Halloween which was directed by Rob Zombie, allows people to see the more twisted sides to his mind. Such things like the story lines and screenplays are permitted into society because it is considered “entertainment”. This is basically society applauding the mixed and out of the ordinary emotions that they are now able to express in the company of others. Another example when King says we do this, “Why? Some of the reasons are simple and obvious. To show that we can, that we are not afraid… etc.” Just as we step up in line to show our emotion and thoughts. Even views on the world by either taking a risk or creating one.

@Ingrid Fowler, I really like this paragraph you constructed based on King’s little essay in our Models for Writers book. I personally liked his essay in the book and your paragraph because expressing insanity through other art forms seem to be normal and, for the most part, quite fine. I personally am not all that afraid to show my insanity through simply what I say or through the poems and short stories I write. You kind of have to let out that little monster inside of you from time to time. Indeed there is no such thing as being normal and I’m quite happy that you addressed that in your paragraph. Artists, in general, have one of the most creative minds and can express it in such a way through however they wish. Another statement you made that I made complete sense was, “Such things like the story lines and screenplays are permitted into society because it is considered “entertainment”. This is basically society applauding the mixed and out of the ordinary emotions that they are now able to express in the company of others.” Though it is quite sad that people think they are only allowed to show their insanity when such “entertainment” is available, I say it’s better to express it daily or at the least once a week. We’re all a little insane. Why not share it with others sometimes? I do. Great paragraph.

    The Benefits of Meditation

Meditation isn’t just for the yogi’s it’s something everyone can do. Yes, even you.
Why would you want to meditate? Well let’s look at the benefits of meditation shall we. First off, meditation can not only improve your mental well being by reducing stress, anxiety and depression; mediation can also improve your physical health by lowering blood pressure, decreasing any pain due to tension such headaches, and enhances the immune system. How does it work? Neurologist have found that mediators shift their brain activity to different areas of the cortex. Brain waves in the stress-prone right frontal cortex move to the calmer left frontal cortex. The mental shift decreases the negative effects of stress, depression and anxiety. There is also less activity in the amygdale, where the brain processes fear. With all these mental changes there is no mystery why the body is effected in such a positive way. So take some time off from your hectic modern lives and close your eyes and take a breath.

The examples used also helps me understand the point that King is driving us toward and you help other readers believe that what he says about the society is expressing there emotion by further breaking it down. “This is basically society applauding the mixed and out of the ordinary emotions that they are now able to express in the company of others.” Your writing is pure genius and it will get you far.

    Negativity. Ugh, what a drag!

So a person wakes up one morning and they just had the best sleep ever, but they just found out that they just over slept and are late for work. They start rushing to get ready but it seems like everything’s going wrong; they’re running into stuff, burning their fingers cooking, and having trouble remembering where they left the keys. “Ugh, it’s going to be such a bad day!” Chances are that they’re right; not because it started as a bad day but because of the negative thoughts running through their mind. Negativity is like a virus; once a bad thought enters the mind nothing good will happen. For example, a student has a big test today at school but he feels like he’s not ready and all he keeps telling himself he’s going to fail. What ends up happening is that he lowers his expectation and in the end only thinks about the failing grade that he hasn’t even gotten yet. Basically we torture our mind telling ourselves “I can’t” and it brings down self- esteem. Negativity can also affect your social life. For example if a person comes around friends who are having a great day and he starts talking about how his day has been horrible and he just wants to hit something; complaining about everything that bothers him and he hates everything and everyone and so on. He brings down everyone’s positivity and hearing the same thing every time just gets annoying. Eventually his friends can’t take anymore so they stop hanging out. Another example would be when a waiter is having an rough day. He takes orders from the costumers but he sounds and looks depressed. They don’t really like the vibe they get from him so ask for another waiter. No one honestly wants to be around a person like that. Wey may want to help them but that person has to be will to change their attitude or else they’ll never escape that feeling. Thinking that everything will go wrong or failure is a sure way to, well, failure. Everyone would just keep a positive attitude they would see that life turns out to be so much fun and great things will start to happen. People often like hanging around positive people because they can help them feel better and it will boost them up. In some cases it’s like having an anti-depressant.

    Chew On That!
A loud growl rattles through your entire body. Immense pain in the pit of your barren stomach leaves you feeling lifeless and hardly functional. This is hunger. This is your body telling you that you need to eat. But what about all the other times throughout the day you intake food; are you really hungry, or is it all in your head? Compulsive overeating or Binge Eating Disorder (B.E.D.) affects many Americans today; it is a growing problem that can easily be resolved. Most people suffering from B.E.D are unaware they overeat, do not have control of their eating habits, or are too ashamed to seek help. A few signs of overeating are: eating an unusually large amount of food at one time, eating when depressed or bored, and eating large amounts of food even when not really hungry. The marketing industry has done their fair share in contributing to overeating, so several people with on the-the-go lifestyles may suffer from Compulsive Overeating. For example, Bill, a small business owner from homestead has to travel to an early showcase taking place in Fort Lauderdale, after a quick breakfast he drives to his destination. The turnpike would be the quickest route to his destination. Little does poor Bill know it is also the quickest way for those marketing specialists work their magic and the next exit is where he proves just how well they do their job. Eye catching billboards and memorable slogans even simple directions like “1 mile off exit 32” can make unsuspecting drivers victim to marketing pretense. Almost everywhere you go you are subject to marketing tricks especially in the food industry, yes; a visual of food can lead you to believe you are hungry, but that is not the only problem. Control is key and distinguishing between hunger and thirst will also help as well. Another example of overeating is this. Now that Bill has made a pit stop at Mc Donald’s to try the Mc Rib, yes its back, after a few bites of his sandwich and eating a quarter of his large fry he begins to feel full. But bill does not stop eating, he finishes and drinks his entire soda, after all he did pay seven dollars for it and now he feels uncomfortable and nauseated. Snacking is okay and actually recommended, but an entire meal is not is not a snack! Recognizing your body is full and responding to that can help you stop overeating, shrink you appetite and even lead to weight loss. A quick fix doesn’t work, but self control and understanding what our body is telling you can go a long way.
